“About the same, except I’ve been looking for a woman, don’t you know?”

“I was kinda hoping you would say that. Do you think we could have supper sometime, maybe a movie?”

“Sounds like fun, if we can find a good movie.”

Corina said, “I didn’t realize you two knew each other.”

Charlene said, “Oh, he helped with my homework in school a time or two.”

Corina got an odd look on her face, but she didn’t say anything. I got the feeling that maybe Charlene didn’t need any help with her homework, then or now.

Charlene asked, “It’s nice of you folks to have me over, and all, but do you suppose you could clear up just why I’m here? Corina was awfully vague on the phone.”

I said, “Do you remember how we used to talk about both being from magical families, but not having any magic?”

“I do. Talking to you was about the best part of high school, for me.”

I reached out magically, and tickled her in a spot I remembered really got to her. She looked at me, and asked, “How did you do that?”

I saw the box of balls that Mom had me working with earlier. I pulled out several, and juggled them around her head. When I put them back into the box, she asked, “Do you expect me to believe that was you, Mark?”

“I don’t expect you to believe much of anything. I remember how you are.”

Corina said, “He knows her, alright.”

Charlene looked at her, a little peeved. I said, “I need to ask you to do something. It isn’t going to make any sense, and it may give you a headache for a little bit. It’s for your own good, though.”

“I don’t know.”

“I know you don’t. I’m still your friend, even if we haven’t talked for a long time. I’m not going to ask you to do anything that will hurt you.”

“I remember that much about you. You always tried to take care of me.”

“Okay, then.” I reached into my pocket, and pulled out my Grandpa’s knife. “Take this, and slice your finger enough for it to bleed a little.”

She looked at Corina, and Corina said, “He knows what he’s doing, Sis. Do what he asks.”

She took the knife, and ran it across her finger. I could tell she was trying to make it look like she had cut herself, without putting enough pressure on the knife to actually cut. To her surprise, that old knife was thirsty, and cut her anyway. She watched as the knife drank the blood, and the cut in her finger healed over. She said, “It’s talking to me.”

I asked, “What is it saying?”

“It says it needs more, if it is going to do its job.”

“Give it some more, then.”

She looked at her finger, where the cut had been, and saw that it was healed over. She cut herself again, deeper this time. The knife sucked up all the blood, and healed the cut. She said, “It says it’s done.” She handed me the knife, and I put it away.
