âAbout the same, except Iâve been looking for a woman, donât you know?â
âI was kinda hoping you would say that. Do you think we could have supper sometime, maybe a movie?â
âSounds like fun, if we can find a good movie.â
Corina said, âI didnât realize you two knew each other.â
Charlene said, âOh, he helped with my homework in school a time or two.â
Corina got an odd look on her face, but she didnât say anything. I got the feeling that maybe Charlene didnât need any help with her homework, then or now.
Charlene asked, âItâs nice of you folks to have me over, and all, but do you suppose you could clear up just why Iâm here? Corina was awfully vague on the phone.â
I said, âDo you remember how we used to talk about both being from magical families, but not having any magic?â
âI do. Talking to you was about the best part of high school, for me.â
I reached out magically, and tickled her in a spot I remembered really got to her. She looked at me, and asked, âHow did you do that?â
I saw the box of balls that Mom had me working with earlier. I pulled out several, and juggled them around her head. When I put them back into the box, she asked, âDo you expect me to believe that was you, Mark?â
âI donât expect you to believe much of anything. I remember how you are.â
Corina said, âHe knows her, alright.â
Charlene looked at her, a little peeved. I said, âI need to ask you to do something. It isnât going to make any sense, and it may give you a headache for a little bit. Itâs for your own good, though.â
âI donât know.â
âI know you donât. Iâm still your friend, even if we havenât talked for a long time. Iâm not going to ask you to do anything that will hurt you.â
âI remember that much about you. You always tried to take care of me.â
âOkay, then.â I reached into my pocket, and pulled out my Grandpaâs knife. âTake this, and slice your finger enough for it to bleed a little.â
She looked at Corina, and Corina said, âHe knows what heâs doing, Sis. Do what he asks.â
She took the knife, and ran it across her finger. I could tell she was trying to make it look like she had cut herself, without putting enough pressure on the knife to actually cut. To her surprise, that old knife was thirsty, and cut her anyway. She watched as the knife drank the blood, and the cut in her finger healed over. She said, âItâs talking to me.â
I asked, âWhat is it saying?â
âIt says it needs more, if it is going to do its job.â
âGive it some more, then.â
She looked at her finger, where the cut had been, and saw that it was healed over. She cut herself again, deeper this time. The knife sucked up all the blood, and healed the cut. She said, âIt says itâs done.â She handed me the knife, and I put it away.
